Workplace 'has become the main cause of business disruption'

15 April 2011

The main cause of business disruption in the UK is now the office rather than technology, it has been found.

According to the study from SunGard Availability Services, incidents in the workplace such as power outages or communication failures are nearly three times more likely to cause business continuity problems than IT issues.

The report indicated there has been a 46 per cent drop year-on-year in the volume of technology disruptions during 2010, while communication problems have risen sharply by 25 per cent.

It is the sixth annual examination of UK business disruption by the company and showed data corruption and hardware failure continued to pose substantial risks to organizations.

Commenting on the results, Sungard Managing Director UK and Executive Vice-President Europe, Keith Tilley, warned: "In today's economic environment, companies can ill afford for employees to be incommunicado for any period of time."

Significant disruptions have been seen to supply chains and other systems around the world following last month's earthquake and tsunami in north-eastern Japan.
