Technology and privacy 'a global issue'

10 November 2009

Issues relating to the protection of personal information "cannot be treated as a regional issue" in the modern world, it has been claimed.

Speaking ahead of a meeting in Canada, Dr Ann Cavoukian, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, explained that "technology has no bounds" and urged delegates to ensure that privacy is embedded into their systems.

The Privacy by Design conference took place ahead of the 31st International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, which will be held in Madrid next week (November 4th-6th) by the Spanish Data Protection Agency and brings together specialists in the field from around the world.

Issues being debated by experts from around the world at the one-day event in Toronto included biometrics, home healthcare technologies and risk optimization.

"We must strive to make privacy - the cornerstone of our rights and freedoms - the default mode of operation - globally," Commissioner Cavoukian added.
