Problems regarding waste management are being seen across the UK as a result of recent snow and ice coupled with the festive holidays.
Bank holidays have compounded interrupted rubbish collections caused by severe winter weather during December.
Bob Neill, the Local Government Minister, has issued a warning about the problem following research by the Daily Telegraph, claiming it is "disappointing that in some cases councils haven't shown more initiative".
Reports have indicated some households have not had refuse collections for four weeks and Mr Neill told the news source a review is needed of how the services individuals pay for can be maintained during the holiday period.
He noted people generate larger volumes of waste during the Christmas break, with Birmingham seeing weather-related problems made worse by a strike in December.
Meanwhile, thousands of homes and businesses in Northern Ireland have been affected by water supply problems caused by sub zero conditions, with emergency talks called at Stormont Castle by the Northern Ireland Executive to address the issue.
