New American National Standard for BCM being led by ASIS

15 October 2008

On 3 October ASIS International hosted the first stakeholder meeting to discuss a BCM standard for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Participants included ASIS International; Association of Contingency Planners; Avalution Consulting; Business Continuity Institute; BSI Management Systems America; Carrier Information Systems; Computer Sciences Corporation; Contingency Planning Association of the Carolinas; Continuity Information Support Services; Danalie Partners; Disaster Recovery Institute International; Emergency Management & Safety Solutions; McDermott Inc.; Navigant Consulting and North River Solutions.

ASIS proposes that the American National Standard for BCM would include scalable and auditable criteria for preparedness, crisis management, business and operational continuity and disaster management. Such a standard it believes is genuinely needed by its members and the business continuity community at large.

Although other standards such as BS 25999 and NFPA 1600 already exist and provide value to the business continuity community, the participants agreed that there was a need for a USA focussed standard that promoted a holistic view of BCM.
