Lyons Seafoods, Europe’s leading processor of king prawns, is the first UK food and drink business to gain a BS 25999 certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI) for its business continuity management system.
BS 25999 is a new standard which provides businesses with a framework to continuously operate in the event of disruption – whether due to disaster or a major incident.
Lyons Seafoods now has 300 different business interruption plans which are being continuously updated. The certificate was awarded to Lyons Seafoods after two years of continuous work with BSI, proving its success in building and imbedding a continuity culture across the whole business, and at all levels.
Jim Landry, director at Lyons Seafoods, said: "We are now equipped and confidently able to provide our customers with the best possible supply guarantees in an increasingly uncertain world. The nature of our business means we source raw materials from all over the world, often from areas with high associated risks such as natural, political and geographical disaster."
"BS 25999 is the most comprehensive risk assessment certification scheme in the UK and is designed to minimise the likelihood and impact of business disruption. We are building on our position as the leading seafood company in the UK and can now provide best practice guarantees based on the external assessment to all our stakeholders."
Julian Thrussell, business continuity product manager at BSI Management Systems, said: "BS 25999 is a framework for resilience and business success. The professionalism shown by Lyons Seafoods in protecting their customers and their business does them credit and proves they are able to prevent incidents and respond appropriately when necessary. All businesses should be asking their suppliers about business continuity - it's a real benefit for all parties."
