Firms 'overestimating cloud computing security risk'

07 December 2010

Companies in the UK may overestimate the security threat cloud computing poses to their operations, an expert has declared.

Chief Executive of ThinkGrid, Rob Lovell, explained there is a "lack of understanding" among firms about the technology and "many organizations are fearful about security".

He explained information stored in the cloud is managed on behalf of companies by specialist businesses and tends to be "far more secure than their typical office IT set-up".

According to Mr Lovell, security and cloud solutions are likely to be key trends in enterprise IT during the coming year as the latter offers flexibility and remote working capabilities that enable people to "work anytime and anywhere".

His remarks come in the wake of a study by Ovum noting cloud computing and other developing new technologies such as social media offer firms a range of opportunities, but also have vulnerabilities that adopters should be aware of.
