Expert warns of potential smartphone security risk

08 November 2010

Smartphones pose a possible risk to security in workplaces, it has been suggested.

This is the assertion made by Editor of Mobile Business, Heather Mclean, who pointed to the growing use of the devices by employees.

She stated: "There are now companies that do produce special security software to make sure iPhone's are completely safe."

Ms Mclean added that firms may be switching their business handsets over to the iPhone or Android smartphones in order to control the security levels on the devices.

Her remarks come after Standard Chartered bank revealed in May it has decided to adopt the iPhone as its global smartphone of choice.

In related news, research by Juniper Networks indicated that such gadgets blur the boundaries between personal and business communications.

The study advised organizations to put measures in place to ensure that employees' use of smartphones is secure and does not place sensitive information at risk.
