The current system of aviation security is "unsustainable" and innovative and efficient measures are needed to address the problem, one expert asserts.
According to ACI Europe Communications Manager, Robert O'Meara, approaches to date have been reactive and based on layers of legislation that often fail to take the impact on aviation of rules into account.
"We believe that it is possible to maintain the integrity of the security chain, through advancements in security technology and a more efficient approach," he explained.
Mr O'Meara added the past five years in particular have seen substantial changes to airport security and advocated a review of the current system at both European Union (EU) and UK levels.
He also noted that in the EU, the industry is expected to fund safety measures, while in the US this is paid for by the federal government.
The expert's comments come after discussions were held by European and US aviation officials regarding the effectiveness of aviation security systems.
