Employees encouraged to prepare for flu outbreak

02 December 2011

Several of Edinburgh's leading companies are encouraging employees to prepare fully for a potential flu outbreak this winter, in an effort to boost health and help business continuity.

According to STV, Royal Mail, Scotrail, Lothian Buses, Stagecoach and law firm Biggart Baillie are among those highlighting the importance of getting a flu jab this season.

The vaccine is being targeted at a number of at-risk groups, including those who are aged 65 and over, unpaid carers, NHS staff who deal directly with patients and anyone who has a pre-existing long-term medical condition such as asthma, liver disease or lung problems.

Recently, the Northern Echo reported that less than one-third of vulnerable people aged under 16 are currently receiving the jab.

Human resources director for Royal Mail in Scotland Gary Crawford said the organisation supports any campaign that proactively tackles the problem.

He said: "As a large employer, we never underestimate the impact of the flu virus, and anything which can help protect people from passing on the viruses is to be commended."

Ian Craig, managing director at Lothian Buses, made similar remarks, adding that seasonal flu is "highly contagious" and can result in serious illness.

"We promote a healthy working lifestyle to our staff and take their wellbeing seriously," he explained.

Complications that can be suffered from flu include pneumonia and bronchitis, with the vaccination not only helping the individual stay healthy but having a knock-on effect on the whole community by stopping the spread of the disease.

Head of occupational safety at ScotRail Stewart Barr stated that anyone eligible for a jab should make an appointment with their GP as soon as possible.

Those receiving the vaccine this year will be protected from three strains of the virus, including swine flu, which is still currently in circulation.
