Detailed Recovery Plans Earn Sembcorp ‘Top 20’ Status

04 December 2008

Sembcorp UK has become one of the first twenty organisations in the world to achieve a significant business award.

The industrial utilities and services company has gained a prestigious award for business continuity – the ability of an organisation to recover from any major business disruption. BSI Management Systems presented its BS25999-2 certificate to managers at the Wilton International site.

Sembcorp is one of less than twenty companies worldwide to gain the standard and is the only company in the world in its sector to have done so.

The award followed a detailed BSI audit and testing of its systems in dealing with a wide range of emergency situations, from a serious operational incident to the complete failure of IT systems.

David Guy, Sembcorp Senior Vice President, said: "It is a great honour and a significant achievement for our business to be recognised in this way. It means we can demonstrate to our customers, shareholders and employees that we have robust systems in place that allow us to cope in just about any eventuality. However, we are not complacent and we need to continue to test those systems on a regular basis and are happy to share our expertise with others."

David McLean, Team Manager with BSI Management Systems, said: "The standard was published less than a year ago and is therefore still relatively new, but to have reached certification at this stage is really quite a task. Sembcorp should be very proud of what it has achieved."

Lynsey Pickering, who together with her colleague Bill Simpson drove the process for Sembcorp, said: "Certification to this standard will become the rule rather than the exception for many companies in the future and companies without it will find it increasingly difficult to do business."
