Cloud computing 'will raise information security issues'

17 December 2009

A number of questions relating to data protection will be raised as a result of growing adoption of cloud computing technology, it has been predicted.

Bridget Treacy, Partner at legal services firm Hunton & Williams, explained that information may well be accessed from jurisdictions other than those in which it is held.

Referring to the UK in particular, she warned: "The Information Commissioner will shortly have the power to impose massive penalties … on organizations that are involved in a serious breach of the Data Protection Act."

With regulations regarding the handling of information varying between countries, Ms Treacy suggested that the new system is likely to be in place from next April and compliance will become a more significant issue as a result.

Her comments follow a recent study by the European Network and Information Security Agency, which revealed that concerns about information security are the biggest barrier to organizations adopting cloud technology.
