Call for international social media standards

22 June 2011

A set of international standards should be introduced to govern the use of social media websites, it has been claimed.

According to the British Interactive Media Association, putting measures in place to oversee portals such as Twitter and Facebook could improve their legal position.

The organization's Chair, Justin Cooke, explained: "We have reached an inflection point, where the real and the digital world are colliding on an unprecedented scale."

He added that creating international standards for the sector will require legal structures "that have taken 1,000 years to put in place" to be reformed.

Mr Cooke also suggested the market should be encouraged to self-regulate, as any digital consensus on human rights appears to be some way in the future.

His remarks come after a series of high-profile cases involving the legal position of social media sites, including the recent issue of super injunctions being breached on Twitter in the UK.
