Business continuity report highlights major vulnerabilities

06 August 2010

A study of enterprise networks has revealed the leading vulnerabilities existing in current systems.

According to network discovery solutions provider Lumeta, the most often undiscovered weaknesses include the incorrect deployment of systems intended to detect and prevent intrusion, which affects 88 per cent of organizations.

In a report on its business continuity findings, the firm also revealed vulnerability management tools should be used across all segments of networks, with 76 per cent of firms failing to do so, while 50 per cent of enterprises surveyed were found to still have default credentials in place.

Michael Markulec, Lumeta's Chief Operating Officer, explained that backdoor connections are often vulnerable to leaks, something that has been identified using IPsonar technology on some of the largest networks in the world.

He highlighted the "very real costs incurred by companies that have suffered major data breaches or operational downtime" and added that many gaps are "easily remedied" once they have been detected.

BSI has published new guidance on exercising and testing for continuity and contingency programmes, PD 25666:2010, which is intended to be used in conjunction with relevant documents and standards including BS 25999, BS 25777, ISO/PAS 22399 and BS ISO/IEC 27001.
