Bankinter is the first Spanish company to be certified to BS 25999, the internationally recognised standard for Business Continuity Management. The award demonstrates Bankinter's commitment to delivering the highest standards to its customers and supports its leading position in technology and online banking.
Bankinter is engaged in the provision of retail and commercial banking services. The bank also offers products such as mortgages, insurance, pensions and credit cards to individuals through its network branches. The company primarily operates in Spain, is headquartered in Madrid and employs about 3,700 people.
The certification was awarded by British Standards Institution (BSI) with the following scope: identification, authentication, signature of finance operations and electronic evidences through Internet, operative teleprocess and routing infrastructure of equity funds. Geographically the bank's certification covers Tres Cantos and Alcobendas.
Bankinter's Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) was exhaustively reviewed during the BSI assessment process. The bank's organisation, business continuity staff, operation processes for the detection and reaction to incidents, and its risk management programmes were examined.
BS 25999 certification compliments certification to ISO 27001, the international standard for Information Security Management System (ISMS). When BSI certified Bankinter to ISO 27001 in 2006 the bank was also the pioneer in Spain; it achieved the highest standards for quality and professionalism for information security management.
Bankinter's purpose has always been to follow a management systems approach which meets the requirements of ISO 27001, and more recently, BS 25999. This approach has allowed the bank to have a short implementation process - less than six months - taking advantage of the existing synergies with the current ISO 27001 certification.
Marcio Viegas, Managing Director of BSI Spain declared: "Both these certificates awarded by BSI (ISO 27001 and BS 25999) are internationally recognised and accepted due to the fact that they are accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service). This fact gives the bank international recognition and acceptance by their customers. In a global environment with online banking, this is an essential and competitive advantage".
